Turning a shipyard into Taikoo Shing

Taikoo Shing was originally a shipyard, built in 1907. In 1972 The Taikoo Dockyard and Engineering Company Limited merged with the Hongkong & Whampoa Dock Company and formed Hongkong United Dockyards (HUD) and moved the operation of container port to Kwai Chung. In 1973, Swire Properties converted the shipyard into residential estates and commercial buildings.

It is also popular with working professionals due to its proximity to office buildings. A portion of the population, including Japanese and Koreans, also resides here, making it a Japanese community.

The shopping mall occupies 1.11 million square feet and is renowned for its Japanese brands.
