Ladies’ Market 女人街

Ladies Market entrance Argyle Street
Mong Kok’s Tung Choi Street, also known as “Ladies’ Market,” is a pedestrian-only area selling souvenirs. It begins at Argyle Street and is a shopping district. Exit E of the Mong Kok MTR station takes you to the middle of Tung Choi Street. Or, if you go to Fa Yuen Street (the Sneakers Street) for sports goods, you will pass the Tung Choi Street. The street ‘s name “Tung Choi” means water spinach, if it is translated directly.

This shopping area consists of small shops and stalls, covered with canvas tents to block out the sun. Most of them are souvenirs that tourists would choose, such as waist bags, backpacks, T-shirts, imitation oil paintings, small pendants, key chains, small mahjong pieces, small street signs, small leather goods, wallets, etc. It’s a great time to shop for souvenirs.

Actually, about 20 or 30 years ago, the main items sold were ready-made clothing, such as jackets, jeans, and belts. Because of their low prices and wide variety of styles, many families, especially middle-income families, bought clothes there. The families would bring their children there to shop for new clothes for New Years and Christmas.

However, these stores were later replaced by department stores and clothing chains.

The key point of traveling here is that the temperature of this street is higher and hotter than other streets, so you need to bring enough water. Therefore, visiting Ladies’ Market between dusk and evening is best, as it’s less hot and more lively.

Ladies’ Market actually has two sections, including a smaller section near Bute Street. This section of market is located at the intersection of Fa Yuen Street and Bute Street. You will see it when you walk on Bute Street towards Mong Kok East Station, if you head to MOKO shopping mall.
