Sam Tung Uk Museum 三棟屋博物館

Tsuen Wan Sam Tung Uk Museum
The Sam Tung Uk Museum is located not far from Tsuen Wan MTR Station, a 10-minute walk from the Luk Yeung Galleria shopping centre.

This exhibition venue not only tells the over-200-year history of the Hakka Chan family but also showcases other Hong Kong cultural heritage, including opera, sculpture, lion dance equipment, stage structures, cheongsams (a sort of lady long dress) and various traditions or arts.

Sam Tung Uk means “three halls’ house”, if it is translated directly. The entire exhibition is housed within a walled village.

This type of building, only found in the 1970s and 1980s, is a two-story house with an open-plan layout and a wooden staircase leading to the second level. The upper level typically houses a bed for sleeping, while the lower level serves as the living room and kitchen.

The village is divided into rooms, each with a theme, introducing a specific exhibit, which tells the story and origins. Staffs are on hand to explain the history of the exhibits.

The exhibition is open until 6:00 PM. Another point worth noting is that the museum has ample air conditioning, making it a great place to relax.
